Vey’s Village School

Outside of Siem Reap, a young villager wished to give back to his community and decided to start teaching children the English skills they weren’t taught. He found a couple benches, a board and a roof, and started teaching. We are grateful to be able to give this wonderful passion project the home it deserves.

Since: July 2020 Students: 50  Teachers: 2 Local trusted partner: Adore Cambodia, Magical Light

Vey’s Village School was completed in the middle of the pandemic, in June 2020. Before the school was built, Vey was using the space beneath his house (which is built on stilts) to teach English lessons to children from the surrounding villages. With room for only 5 benches, a blackboard but no walls, limited school materials, poor lighting and no access to bathrooms or clean drinking water, there was much that could be improved.

The new school now offers its students a safe and clean place to learn and is able to accommodate a greater number of students. The list of children who wish to learn English skills in order to increase their chances of a better job and a new future is long. And along with Vey, we are hoping to give them all the opportunity they deserve.

Who are the Khmer People?

It is estimated that around 70% of Cambodians live in the countryside where many do not have access to proper education, good healthcare, adequate sanitation or access to clean, safe water.

Living conditions in the remote villages of Cambodia are some of the worst in the world; unsafe, unsanitary and unsure. Cambodians suffer extreme poverty, earning less than $2 a day, if they are lucky enough to work. Children can’t always go to school – and the cycle of poverty continues.
